Feb 2011. The Residents committee from the 1960’s estate kindly invited Michael Herrmann and fellow colleagues from Kingston to a workshop looking at design solutions for an improved estate masterplan. Aiming to remove its isolation from the neighbouring community and integrate the 500 flats into the surroundings and Battersea Park. Only 20% of the flats remain in council ownership, but a 10% objection can stop any plans. Unfortunately history shows that people don’t like change. They are also aiming to provide a food production garden within the 3 hectare site. Desired outcomes would include, exterior spaces for groups, designate a cycle lane, removal of excess signs, redefine green spaces, reduce light pollution from street lights, green roofs, soften vegetation planting designs, composting and explore rain water harvesting. Caroline Kresfelder, Peter Lanigan-O’Keeffe and Peter Rae kindly walked us through the site and spent time over tea and biscuits discussing current issues.
