Feb 2011. Richmond Park. Adam Curtis, Assistant Park Manager and Ruth Holmes, Royal Parks Landscape Development Manager hosted a presentation at Holly Lodge in Richmond Park, to discuss the management of the park. The 1000 hectares is a SSSI site and has about 2000 veteran trees. The site is one of the key habitats for insects dependent on dead wood and has protected acid grasslands. Adam pointed out that if you add something, then it needs to be looked after, which draws on resources, so the more nature can do the better. This has also allowed them to retain its ‘countryside character’. They are currently researching which trees are best suited to the site, as the veteran trees will not last forever and many are susceptible to disease. This requires the planting of different species of tree with detailed recording of growth over many years to see which trees suit different settings.
