Building Centre Breakfast Talk, Designing London’s Waste

April 2010. Alan Jones, Dow Jones Architects reminded us that the GLA had intended that by 2010, 85% of London’s waste should be processed within London, by converting it into bioproducts and heat. Anaerobic digestion acts like composting and the gas produced can be used as a source of power (Komogas). They have designed a standard unit, which can be located in commercial parks, which would in turn heat the buildings.

Paul Buckley of Buckley, Grey Yeoman, are also designing anaerobic facilities to process up to 100,000 tonnes of waste. Waste delivered to their plants would be sorted through large water tanks. This would produce, 4 megawatts of power, biogas, recyclables, water and digestates (soil improver).

John Lyall then spoke about his designs for 4 sewage pumping stations on the 2012 Olympic site, to sort sewage, black water and water.
