Liverpool New Brighton

March 2009. We went to see New Brighton for the first time, which is at the tip of the Wirral Peninsular, on the other side of the Mersey from Liverpool. This was chosen as the site for our final project of the first year and we had to spend some time  (1 hour!!) referencing it and getting some ideas. So it was straight into the cafe for lunch. this was a cold, but dry day and as expected for a weekday in March, it was very quiet. The railway station is situated at the top of Victoria Road, which leads directly down to the sea. This would have been a very busy retail street in the days of old and may be still during the summer months. In the late 1800's new Brighton was designed to be a real seaside attraction town, with a large open air pool, a 562ft tower, an enormous ballroom and a large pier. Due to falling numbers and neglect, these had all disappeared by the 1970's. However, there is a very long sea wall stretching 2.65kms and lots of open grassland, so I am sure it is popular later in the year. Locals talk of New Brighton very fondly, but that refers to days gone by. I think it is important to re-establish the area, but more as a year round seascape experience, rather than a cheap pleasure novelty.
