Project 5a, Brighton, West Sussex

We all made our own way by train to Brighton, which was a simple journey for me from Wandsworth Common and surprisingly quick. Another cold but bright day and I got there early, so had a walk around for a couple of hours before meeting up at the station. It is amazing how late some people can be. The aim was to explore the boundaries and edges of areas, choose a route from the station to the sea and map it out. First of all, I walked straight down the main road to the sea, which was just like any town centre street, full of cheap shops and high street brands. Then I had a look at the far more picturesque route through Brighton's famous Lanes. Lots of small streets, pedestrianised in part and full of a real mix of local food and retail shops. Not the standard kiss me quick seaside attractions. It was a great chance to have a look at New Road, which had just one a Landscape Institute award. A perfect blend of shared use between vehicle and pedestrian, with no road markings.
