Urban Tree Talk. Trees & Climate Change,

Feb 2011.Dr Roland Ennos University of Manchester. The UK climate will warm up by 4% over the next 80 years and this could lead to the loss of many native trees, which is a real concern, as trees cool the environment. Urban surfaces have become increasingly impermeable, increasing water surface run off. Manchester University has been studying how different surfaces around the base of trees and types of soil effects their growth. Hey found that the best soil is the Amsterdam mix and a tree planted in open soil, rather than having grass around its base, was the most healthy and therefore offers the best cooling potential. They found that the temperature of concrete in the shade is similar to that of the surrounding air, but when in full sun, the temperature of a concrete base can be double the air temperature. The simple conclusion is that the potential cooling ability of a tree is dependent on the growing conditions and tree are vital reducers of surface water run-off.
