March 2009. Long before you arrive in Manchester it is pointed by the new Ian Simpson designed 170 meter Beetham Tower, housing the Hilton Hotel, which dominates the skyline. We parked up in the old canal area and walked into the centre via the new RIBA award wining Civil Justice Building, with landscaping by Hyland Edgar Driver, a classic granite, grass and trees style. Then it was along some of the canals, more than Venice we were told, with a real mix of old warehouse and new development. The next landmark was 1 Deansgate also designed by Ian Simpson, with sturdy trusses supporting a part void floor. Then it was through the Royal Exchange Arcade, which has retained the original dealing sign. Then it was on to the site of the 1996 IRA bomb, redesigned by EDAW and onto the Martha Schwartz Exchange Square. Then across to EDAW's Piccadilly Gardens and passed Tadao Ando bunker pavilion. This site was fairly deserted at this time of year, but during the summer pictures show it to be very popular, with people taking advantage of the cooling water feature.
