Urban Design, Basics in Landscape Architecture

April 2011. Written by Ed Wall & Tim Waterman (2010) AVA Publishing.

‘Nowadays, relatively few public spaces are created with only the public good in mind. More often than not, urban spaces are viewed from a more corporate viewpoint that sees only their economic value. Even trees must now be given a cash value for people to gauge the importance of keeping them. Urban designers must be constantly vigilant to ensure that the functions of public squares are not given over totally to commerce or to flashy spectacles that have little to do with the pleasant banality of everyday life’.

Following my studies at university, this paragraph sums up perfectly my reflection of many Landscapes and the true intensions of those involved. Every student of Landscape Architecture should buy this book and read it a couple of times. It outlines so many of the key issues, principles and formulas for landscape Architecture, using books and projects as constant resources.
