Jan 2011. Sam Johnston, Gustafson Porter gave a lecture and opened by saying Neil Porter had said it was ‘everything under the sun’. Sam thinks it is, ‘out there and in here’. He always starts by understanding and conceptualising the site. Gustafson Porter designed a landscape at Lake Balaton in Hungary, thinking about mind, body and heart. It was inspired by many different trees and a highly reflective lake. The water carries a lot of Silica and is therefore more reflective. He also presented some images of a project they are doing at Hook Park, the Architectural Association woodland in Dorset. Sam felt if you are deep in the woods it can be scary, claustrophobic or stimulate your imagination. A notable woodland expert of modern art has been commissioned to place a few installations in the grounds. Another site he used was the Woolwich Square site being built around an old market place in South East London. He explained how they engage with the locals to research a site and look into its history. Then why is it so often just a rework of the granite, grass, terrace and water concept.
