Jan 2011. The Good, The Bad and The Plane Ugly. If a ‘green’ label can be attached to new urban landscapes, then that is all too often the driving force of a designs sales pitch. Longevity of materials, plants and trees needs to be considered over the simple cost of putting objects in a place. A London plane tree will not filter out air pollutants, if it dies through poor soil, lack of water and no attention. Urban trees are all too often used as symbolic interventions in the urban realm, are taken for granted and do not survive, due to a basic lack of knowledge of those involved in the whole process. This study condenses available information to guide those involved with trees and the design of the public urban realm and aims to provide the tools for good practice. Its conclusion is that whilst efforts are being made to improve the situation, funding may not be available and good intentions will be put on hold.
